TOPIC:TORTICOLLIS

**DEFINITION:Torticollis occurs when your baby's neck muscles cause their head to turn and rotate to one side. It's also called wryneck. It can be congenital or acquired. Symptoms include stiff and swollen neck muscles.

** CAUSES:The cause of congenital muscular torticollis is unknown; however, it may be related to abnormal positioning (breech position, for example) or "crowding" of the baby while in the uterus. This results in an injury to the neck muscle that scars as it heals.

** SYMTOMS:an inability to move your head normally.

*neck pain or stiffness

*a headache

*having one shoulder higher than the other

*swollen neck muscles

*a tilting of your chin to one side.

** DIAGNOSIS:Infant torticollis (tor-ti-col-lis) is easily diagnosable by tightened muscles on one side of the neck, which leaves your baby's head at a tilt or rotation.

** TREATMENT:

** If your baby does have torticollis, the doctor might teach you neck stretching exercises to practice at home. These help loosen the tight SCM and strengthen the one on the other side, which is looser and weaker due to underuse. This will help to straighten out your baby's neck.

** Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and a neck collar can help to treat the condition. In some cases, children will also benefit from a muscle relaxant.
