They include visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and reading/writing-based learners or methods. Students may use or prefer any combination and number of these approaches to learn most effectively, but one learning style is typically more dominant than the rest.
Learner Type Characteristics
Every learning style has specific characteristics which may be used in both classroom and homeschool settings. All learning approaches are worthwhile to explore in order to find the best fit for an individual student. Many individuals belonging to a certain learning style, usually exhibit certain characteristics based on the way they learn. The remainder of this lesson will focus on the characteristics that each learning style and the different types of learners possess, what teaching strategies work best with certain types of learners, how students can best retain information based on each approach, and which subjects the different learning styles may work best in when applied.
Aural/Auditory/Musical Learners
The first learning style which different types of learners may be exposed to is auditory or musical learning. Students using this approach focus more closely during lessons by listening and absorbing information, rather than reading or taking detailed notes
Verbal/Linguistic Learners
Verbal or linguistic learners retain information the best when it is spoken, read, or written. Text is more useful to these learners than auditory or visual methods of teaching. Students who learn linguistically tend to take more detailed notes, have an extensive vocabulary, and focus on creating unique ways to recall information using mnemonic devices, or plays on words
Visual/Spatial Learners
Students who learn most effectively when they can see something taking place are visual or spatial learners. The presentation of pictures, charts, graphs, maps, and power point slides to these individuals help them retain information.
