Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy (JME) is a common type of epilepsy that starts in adolescence. Here are the main points about JME in simple terms:

1. **Onset**: JME usually begins between ages 12 and 18.
2. **Symptoms**: It causes sudden, brief jerks of the muscles (myoclonic jerks), often in the morning.
3. **Seizure Types**: People with JME may also have other types of seizures, such as absence seizures (brief lapses in awareness) and generalized tonic-clonic seizures (convulsions).
4. **Triggers**: Common triggers for JME seizures include lack of sleep, stress, alcohol, and flashing lights.
5. **Diagnosis**: Doctors diagnose JME using a combination of patient history, EEG (a test that measures brain waves), and sometimes brain imaging.
6. **Treatment**: JME is usually treated with medications called antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), which help control the seizures.
7. **Prognosis**: With proper treatment, many people with JME can lead normal, active lives, although they might need to continue medication for a long time.
