Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) encompasses several types or subtypes.
 Including:

Autistic Disorder This is what most people think of when they hear "autism". It involves significant social, communication, and behavioral challenges.

Asperger Syndrome: Individuals with Asperger syndrome typically have fewer speech delays but still experience challenges with social interactions and may exhibit repetitive behaviors.

Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS): This category is used when someone has some but not all features of autism or doesn't fit neatly into other categories.

Childhood Disintegrative Disorder: This is a rare condition where a child develops typically for a period of time (usually at least 2 years) and then loses previously acquired language and social skills.

Rett Syndrome: Although not always included under ASD, it involves regression in development after a period of normal functioning, primarily seen in females.

Other Specified and Unspecified Neurodevelopmental Disorders: These categories are used when symptoms of ASD are present but do not fully meet the criteria for any specific ASD subtype.

It's important to note that with the update to diagnostic criteria in the DSM-5, these specific subtypes have been replaced with a more general diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) with varying levels of severity. This change was made to better reflect the diverse presentation of symptoms across individuals with autism.
