Fluency disorders refer to disruptions in the natural flow and timing of speech, often characterized by hesitations, repetitions, prolongations, or blocks in speech production. They can be broadly classified into two main types:
Stuttering: Stuttering is the most common fluency disorder, characterized by disruptions in the normal flow of speech, such as repetitions of sounds, syllables, or words; prolonged sounds; or blocks where the person is unable to produce sounds.
Cluttering: Cluttering involves a rapid or irregular speech rate that disrupts the fluency of speech. People with cluttering may speak too fast, merge words together, or have difficulties with organizing their thoughts during speech, which can make their speech sound disorganized or unclear.
Both stuttering and cluttering can vary in severity and can have significant impacts on communication and social interactions. Treatment for fluency disorders often involves speech therapy tailored to the specific needs and characteristics of the individual.
