Definition: Pneumothorax, or collapsed lung, is when air enters the space between the lung and chest wall, causing the lung to collapse.
Types
1. Primary Spontaneous Pneumothorax (PSP).
- Occurs without obvious cause, often in tall, thin, young men.
2. Secondary Spontaneous Pneumothorax (SSP)
- Occurs in those with existing lung diseases like COPD.
3. Traumatic Pneumothorax
- Caused by chest injury or medical procedures.
4. Tension Pneumothorax
- A severe, life-threatening form where trapped air increases pressure on the lungs and heart.
Treatment
1. Observation for small cases.
2. Oxygen Therapy to speed air absorption.
3. Needle Aspiration/Chest Tube to remove air and allow lung re-expansion.
4. Surgery for recurrent or severe cases.
5. Pleurodesis to prevent recurrence by adhering lung to chest wall.
