Prosthesis( tracheo oesophageal perforation or TEP)? Tracheo oesophageal perforation( TEP) is the most common way to restore speech after surgery to remove your larynx( laryngectomy). But it isn't suitable for everyone. You generally have TEP as part of your laryngectomy operation. Or you can go back for a minor operation to have it done latterly. This is generally at least 8 weeks after your laryngectomy. How you have TEP Your surgeon makes a bitsy hole called a fistula at the reverse of your stoma. You keep the cathether in the hole until the area has healed. You might be suitable to have liquid food down the tube during this time. Once the area has healed and you're eating and drinking, your croaker
takes the catheter out. And puts a small, one way stopcock into the hole. still, you have a feeding tube down your nose( nasogastric tube) for a while, If you do not have a catheter put into the hole. People who have TEP some time after their laryngectomy, need the catheter to be in place only for many days. Or you might have the stopcock( voice prosthesis) put in straight down. Using a voice prosthesis The voice prosthesis is a stopcock that allows you to make sounds by pushing air from your lungs through the stopcock and over into your mouth. You have to cover your stoma with your fritters so that the air goes through the stopcock and not out of the stoma. Once you can use this type of voice prosthesis, you might be suitable to use other types of stopcock which are hands free. They automatically close the stoma when you're using your speaking stopcock. So you will not have to put your hand up to cover the hole when you want to say anything. But hands free faucets aren't suitable for everyone. Diagram showing a voice stopcock Using a voice prosthesis takes practice. Your speech therapist will help you. After a while, the muscles deep in your throat grow stronger and joggle more fluently as the air passes through. When you have got used to it, you might be surprised at how well you can be understood. Voice prosthesis faucets There are 3 main types of stopcock used in the UK Blom- songster stopcock Provox stopcock Groningen stopcock Blom- songster faucets and some Provox faucets are external faucets. This means they're meant to be taken out to be gutted. numerous people look after these faucets themselves. Your stopcock must be keptclean. However, air cannot pass through it fluently and you will not be suitable to speak, If it gets blocked. Your nanny shows you how to take out the stopcock, clean it and put it back. You can exercise this until you're confident enough to do it on your own. Groningen and some types of Provox faucets are internal faucets. You leave them in place until they need changing. occasionally you might need to switch from one type of stopcock to another if your stopcock needs changing.
