Cerebral palsy (CP) is an umbrella term for a group of permanent movement and posture disorders that limit activity. The underlying cause is an acquired pathology within the developing brain during the prenatal, neonatal, or early infant period.
Causes :
Cerebral palsy is usually caused by a problem that affects the development of a baby's brain while it's growing in the womb. These include: damage to part of the brain called white matter, possibly as a result of a reduced blood or oxygen supply – this is known as periventricular leukomalacia (PVL).
Symptoms :
People may experience:
Muscular: difficulty walking, difficulty with bodily movements, muscle rigidity, permanent shortening of muscle, problems with coordination, stiff muscles, overactive reflexes, involuntary movements, muscle weakness, muscle spasms, or paralysis of one side of the body
Developmental: failure to thrive, learning disability, slow growth, or speech delay in a child
Speech: speech disorder or stuttering
Also common: constipation, difficulty raising the foot, difficulty swallowing, drooling, hearing loss, leaking of urine, paralysis, physical deformity, scissor gait, seizures, spastic gait, teeth grinding, or tremor
Treatment :
Treatment depends on severity of symptoms
Long-term treatment includes physical and other therapies, drugs and sometimes surgery.
