De Quervains syndrome
Published
• De Quervain's tenosynovitis is a condition that causes pain associated with movement of the thumb and wrist. The cause of the pain of de Quervain's is inflammation within a confined area around the base of the thumb. This inflammation is caused by a tendon problem called stenosing tenosynovitis. This means that the tendons at the base of the thumb come bothered as a result of repetitious stress causing damage to these tendons and performing inflammation
• This condition was named afterDr. Felix de Quervain, a Swiss croaker who described this condition in the late 1800s. Since that time, much has been learned about the cause of this condition and the colorful ways to treat this problem. Because of some of the causes of this type of tendinitis, some people relate to this condition by different names. occasionally the problem is called de Quervain's tendinosis, de Quervain's complaint, texting thumb, gamer's thumb, or new mama 's thumb.
• De Quervain’s tenosynovitis generally impacts the abductor pollicis longus( APL) and the extensor pollicis brevis( EPB) tendons, which pass through the first rearward cube of the wrist.
• The etiology of this complaint is due to repetitious and continued strain of the APL and EPB tendons as they pass under a thickened and swollen extensor retinaculum.
• Cases present with complaints of pain and inflammation in the region of the radial styloid. This pain is aggravated by stir and exertion taking ulnar divagation with a clenched fist and thumb metacarpophalangeal( MP) common flexion.
• Specific conditioning that may incite complaints include twisting a washcloth, gripping a golf club, lifting a child, or forging a nail. Inflammation is increased with continued performance of these or analogous functional conditioning.
• This is due to a confined gliding of the APL and EPB tendons in the narrowed cube caused by a thickening of the extensor retinaculum and the APL and EPB tendons.
