The term "reinforcement" may refer to anything that increases the probability that a response will occur. The term "reinforcement psychology" refers to the effect of reinforcement on behavior. Reinforcement may increase or strengthen the response, whether positive or negative.
Behavioral psychologists study methods to increase desired behaviors and decrease undesired behavior. One of these methods is operant conditioning.
In this type of conditioning, a behavior is paired with something pleasant or unpleasant. This trains people to behave in the desired way. A simple way to look at operant conditioning is that it is learning based on consequences. Those consequences are called reinforcements and punishments.
# Primary and Secondary reinforcement :
> Primary reinforcement is known as unconditional reinforcement because no learning is necessary for primary reinforcers to work.
> Secondary reinforcement or conditioned reinforcement teaches that a somewhat unrelated event will follow a behavior.
# Types :-
(1) positive reinforcement
(2) avoidance learning, or negative reinforcement
(3) extinction and
(4) punishment.
Each type plays a different role in both the manner in which and extent to which learning occurs.
