GBS

Published

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a rare neurological disorder where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nerves. This can lead to weakness, numbness, and tingling, often starting in the legs and spreading to the upper body. In severe cases, GBS can cause paralysis.

The exact cause of GBS is not fully understood, but it often follows an infection, such as respiratory or gastrointestinal infections. The immune response triggered by the infection can result in damage to the myelin sheath—the protective covering of nerve fibers.
Symptoms of Guillain-Barré syndrome may progress rapidly, and in some cases, individuals may require hospitalization. Treatment often involves supportive care, such as respiratory assistance and physical therapy. Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) or plasmapheresis, a procedure to remove harmful antibodies from the blood, are common therapeutic approaches.
Recovery from GBS varies, and some individuals may experience lingering weakness or fatigue. Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial for managing the condition effectively. While Guillain-Barré syndrome can be a serious and potentially life-threatening condition, many individuals do recover with proper medical care and rehabilitation.
