Obsession

6/6/2023 10:00:28 AM

Obsession

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in children is characterised by unwanted thoughts that occur frequently, occupy a significant amount of time (more than an hour per day), interfere with daily tasks, or cause extreme distress. Obsessions are the names for the thoughts.
Obsessions are extremely unpleasant and challenging to manage. In order to reduce the distress brought on by their obsessions, children with OCD adopt repetitive behaviours known as compulsions.

A child might, for instance, be paralysed by the worry that their parents will have a car accident. They might switch a light on and off five times to get rid of the worry. Even though they are aware that it is absurd, they nevertheless believe that the ceremony will protect their parents from harm. That emotion is referred to by experts as "magical thinking."

Obsessions that kids frequently have include:

Fear of contamination, including a fear of germs, trash, vomit, chemicals, etc. Needing everything to be symmetrical or even extreme anxiety about safety, such as fearing that the home would catch fire or that a parent will be injured fear that they'll do something nasty or violent.

Exposure and response prevention (ERP), a type of cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), is the most successful treatment for OCD.

The therapist introduces the child to little doses of the thing that typically sets off their obsession during this therapy. In this way, the kid can practise managing their anxieties in a secure setting. The therapist aids the youngster in resisting their urge. The youngster eventually stops needing the compulsion as they get less worried. The child's family can be taught how to practise at home by the therapist.

Miller fisher syndrome

6/5/2023 10:30:39 AM

Miller fisher syndrome:-

Miller Fisher syndrome is a very rare nerve disease that’s related to Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS).

Guillain-Barré syndrome affects about one in 100,000 people. In the U.S., it’s estimated that 3,000 to 6,000 people develop Guillain-Barré syndrome each year.

Miller Fisher syndrome is a variant of Guillain-Barré syndrome. It’s rarer than Guillain-Barré syndrome. In Western countries, it makes up about 1% to 5% of all Guillain-Barré syndrome cases. The proportion is higher in some East Asian countries. Up to 19% of GBS cases in Taiwan and up to 25% of cases in Japan are Miller Fisher syndrome cases.

Causes
Both GBS and MFS are triggered by a viral infection, most commonly the flu or a stomach bug. Symptoms generally start appearing from one to four weeks after infection with the virus.

Symptoms
While GBS tends to produce muscle weakness that starts in the lower body and travel upward, MFS generally begins with a weakness in the eye muscles and progresses downward. Common symptoms of MFS include:

blurry vision
double vision
weakened facial muscles, such as an inability to smile or whistle, slurred speech, and a decreased gag reflex
poor balance
wobbly gait

Treatment:-
There’s no cure for MFS. The aim of treatment is to lessen the severity of symptoms and speed recovery.

The two main forms of treatment are immunoglobulin therapy and plasmapheresis. These are the same treatments used for GBS.

Plasmapheresis
This is a procedure in which red and white blood cells are removed from the plasma (or liquid) portion of the blood. These cells are then reintroduced into the body, without the plasma.

Both these procedures seem to be equally effectiveTrusted Source in improving the disorder. However, intravenous immunoglobulin therapy is easier to administer. It may be the first therapy tried.

Diffeculty swallowing

5/26/2023 10:52:35 AM

Topic: Difficulty Swallowing

Having trouble swallowing
Known also as dysphagia

Swallowing problems that originate in the throat or esophagus and can range from minor issues to completely excruciating blockages.

USUAL CAUSES:

It is possible for swallowing difficulties to have causes other than underlying diseases. Examples include taking a huge mouthful, not chewing properly, having a dry mouth, taking medicines, or eating excessively hot food. Speaking, laughing, or lying down can all make it challenging to swallow.

SELF-TREATMENT:

It might be simpler to swallow if you chew your food properly, eat smaller meals, and try foods with softer textures. Caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, and difficult-to-swallow foods should all be avoided.

SEEKING MEDICAL ATTENTION:

1. If you are having breathing difficulties, consult a doctor right once.
2. Have a persistent sensation that food is trapped in your throat.
3. Can't swallow anything If your symptoms persist for more than a few days, schedule an appointment with a doctor.
4. unintentional weight loss.
5. Vomit.

Speech and language therapy to learn new swallowing strategies is one of the treatments for dysphagia:
Food and beverages are changed in consistency to make them easier to swallow.
different methods of feeding, including feeding through the nose or stomach with a feeding tube.

How is the swallowing problem managed?

Consider taking shorter, more frequent meals. Eat more slowly, properly chew your food, and cut it up into tiny pieces. There are products available to thicken drinks if you have trouble swallowing liquids. experimenting with various food textures to find which ones make you feel more uncomfortable.

Some people may experience throat tightness or a sensation that something is caught in their throat as a result of stress or anxiety. It has nothing to do with eating and is known as a globus feeling. However, there can be a hidden reason. Swallowing issues are frequently brought on by esophageal disorders.

A swallow test is what?
A swallowing study is a procedure that demonstrates the movements of your throat and oesophagus during swallowing. Fluoroscopy, a test method, employs real-time X-rays to capture images of your swallowing. A chemical called barium will be ingested along with meals and fluids.

Emotional developmental stages

5/25/2023 11:19:42 AM

Emotional developmental stages

Emotions are what help us derive meaning from the world around us. Without them, we would experience life with the vibrancy of reading a technical manual on transmission repair. While our emotions whether good or bad provide a lot of the excitement in life, there’s still a lot about them that we don’t know. Emotional development is key to living a healthy life.

According to the National Center for Safe and Supportive Learning Environments, strong emotional development leads to five key skills: self-awareness, social-awareness, emotional regulation, responsible decision making and relationship building. These skills in turn influence success at school, at home, in communities and in society.
On the other hand, those who are not given emotional guidance often struggle emotionally, academically, physically, and behaviorally.
Emotional development affects all development, and given the small window of incredible growth in children before the age of five, it is crucial to cultivate from the very beginning.
3 Major emotional stages in childhood development

1. Noticing emotions: Birth to one
There are a lot of different theories about how emotions develop and function. Some think we are born with only three emotions, happiness, anger and fear. Others believe that babies are capable of feeling a much wider range from birth. It’s impossible to know for sure when they can’t tell us, but through crying and cooing, babies certainly communicate something. At this stage, an infant is discovering the world good things like cuddles, bad things like full diapers. They are noticing how everything makes them feel.

How to foster growth in this stage
-Create a safe, consistent environment.
-Encourage self-soothing.
-Show your emotion.

2. Expressing emotions: Two to three
As children develop a vocabulary and more independence, they will experiment with expressing emotion in new ways. Some of it will be productive like drawing and narrating a picture of the scary monster under the bed. Some of it will be more like throwing a tantrum in the grocery store because they can’t get cheese puffs. This can be a very difficult stage for adults as children experience complex emotions but have not yet figured out healthy versus unhealthy expression.

How to foster growth in this stage
-Stay calm when they aren’t.
-Give them language to name and explain.
-Provide positive reinforcement.

3. Managing emotions: Three to five
At this stage, children are ready to enter preschool. A new social environment and more independence provides a great opportunity for growth but also poses some new challenges. Sharing, listening and playing together can cause friction between children, and since they cannot rely on their parents all the time anymore, they must develop new coping skills to manage on their own. Preschool caregivers play a vital role in this development as they create a safe space and offer guidance.

How to foster growth in this stage
-Give them strategies.
-Have realistic expectations
-Validate. Validate. Validate.

Self beating and harming

5/19/2023 11:12:04 AM

Today's collab topic: Self Beating and Harming.

Pinching, biting, burning, head banging, kicking or punching walls. These are some of the most popular forms of self-harm.

Pinching, biting, burning, head banging, kicking or punching walls. These are some of the most popular forms of self-harm.

Self-harm releases endorphins that help the individual feel better – it becomes a coping mechanism. It can be difficult to treat children who self-harm because it is such an effective technique for the child. Regardless of the reason for the behavior – whether emotional or social – the harm becomes a part of who they are and how they identify themselves.

In younger children, self-harm can occur in several forms; banging their head against the wall, punching or pinching themselves, biting themselves or punching or kicking a wall. As a parent, there is a fine line to walk to help your child address these behaviors. Dr. Butler cautions against being punitive or giving too much attention to the actual behavior as that will reinforce the act. Instead, it is advised that you help your child calm down and then speak about how they are feeling.

Teaching young children the proper coping skills to handle difficult emotions is the best way to end self-harm behaviors. Working with a mental health professional, you and your child can learn how to self-soothe and develop the skills necessary to work through these challenging emotions without resorting to harm. The good news is that young children who self-harm do not necessarily become adolescents who self-harm.

Learning Disability

5/17/2023 10:12:35 AM

Learning Disability:

Learning disabilities are due to genetic and neurobiological factors that alter brain functioning in a manner which affects one or more cognitive processes related to learning.

These processing problems can interfere with learning basic skills such as reading, writing and/or math.

Learning disabilities should not be confused with learning problems which are primarily the result of visual, hearing, or motor handicaps; of intellectual disability; of emotional disturbance; or of environmental, cultural or economic disadvantages.

The top five most common learning disabilities are
-Dyslexia
-ADHD
-Dyscalculia
-Dysgraphia, and
-Dyspraxia.

Each of these conditions can present with a range of symptoms and can be diagnosed through a combination of medical and educational assessments.

Dyscalculia
A specific learning disability that affects a person’s ability to understand numbers and learn math facts.

Dysgraphia
A specific learning disability that affects a person’s handwriting ability and fine motor skills.

Dyslexia
A specific learning disability that affects reading and related language-based processing skills.

Non-Verbal Learning Disabilities
Has trouble interpreting nonverbal cues like facial expressions or body language and may have poor coordination.

Oral / Written Language Disorder and Specific Reading Comprehension Deficit
Learning disabilities that affect an individual’s understanding of what they read or of spoken language. The ability to express one’s self with oral language may also be impacted.
