Prognosis in phonological disorder
*In general, like articulation disorders, the prognosis of phonological disorders depends on the cause and severity of the disorder.
*In many cases, phonological errors can be eliminated completely with treatment and practice
*Phonological processes are patterns of speech errors that occur as children develop their speech and language skills. Children initially have discoordination of their articulators (tongue, lips, teeth and jaw) which result in simplified patterns of speech.
* If phonological processes continue beyond the appropriate developmental stage, this may indicate a phonological processing disorder or dyslexia.
*Phonological Processing Definition
Phonological processing includes three main components. All these elements are necessary for the development of verbal and written language.
-Phonological awareness involves the perception of the sounds, or phonemes, of a language. It includes the ability to manipulate sounds through segmenting or separating sounds, blending or combining sounds, and rhyming syllables.
-Phonological memory is the temporary storage of phonemic information in short-term memory in order to manipulate sounds in phonological awareness tasks
-Rapid automatized naming (RAN) is the ability to retrieve phonological information from long-term memory by quickly naming such items as letters, numbers, colors and pictures of common objects.
