What is main role of vestibular system
The role main of Vestibular system to detect head positions and head motion relative to gravity .
*ANATOMY:*-
Peripheral vestibular system.
the three primary function of the peripheral vestibular system are :
1. Stabilizing visual images on the fovea of the retina during head movement to allow clear vision.
2. Maintaining postural stability
3. Providing information used for spatial orientation
With in petrous portion of each temporal bone lies in the membranous vestibular labyrinth.
Each labyrinth contain five neural structure that detect head acceleration : three semicircular canals and two otolith organs.
*Central vestibular system*
Vestibular pathways appear to terminate in a unique cortical area.
Connection with the vestibular cortex, thalamus, and reticular formation enable the vestibular system to contribute to the integration of arousal and conscious awareness of the body, as well as to discriminatebetween movement of self and the environment.
Cerebellar connection help maintain the vestibulo-ocular reflex which stabilizes images on the retina during head movements, contributes to posture during static and dynamic activities, and influence the coordination of limb movements.
