Speech banana and it's importance:
"Speech Banana" is a term used to describe the range where most sounds of average conversational speech occur on audiogram.
While many other sounds fall outside of the Speech Banana, audiologist and speech language pathologist are focusing on the frequencies within the speech banana because a Hearing Loss in those frequencies can impact a child's ability to learn language.
Having trained as both audiologist and speech and language pathologist will always ask clients to request a Hearing test to rule out any hearing difficulties and usually begin therapy after we get the results.
Children with recurring ear infections often miss the high frequency sounds eg.. /f/,/s/,/th/ and this can also have a knock on effect on literacy.
If you're approaching yours 50's-60's i'd recommend getting a baseline hearing test in advance as hair cells die as we age and a baseline would ensure you are able to determine if you're losing your hearing as you age be proactive.
